Bio Preventive Medicine Corp. (BPM) held its opening party on November 14 at the TRPMA Southern Harbor Club. Dr Tsay Ching-Yen (Chairman of the Industrial Technology Research Institute), Dr Wu Ming-Ji (Director General of the Industrial Development Bureau), Dr Lee Johnsee (Honorary Chairman of the Taiwan Bio Industry Organization) and Dr Lin Jung-Yaw (an academician of Academia Sinica) were invited to give speeches. Many guests attended this event. The establishment of BPM is the result of the ITRI’s successful execution of a MOEA’s special project. Over the past years, the government has been encouraging the commercialization of biotech research results; and the government is now reaping the harvest of its investment and efforts.

BPM provides biotech R&D and testing services based on the application of emerging biomarker technology. The company focuses on the development of biomarkers and molecular diagnostic technology to improve disease prevention. The company’s strategy is to develop products for detecting diseases of high global prevalence rate, as well as products for a niche market in the Asia-Pacific region. BPM is soon to launch a marker for early detection of diabetic nephropathy through testing patients’ urine. This product can be used for the routine test for diabetic patients, as well as for monitoring the renal function of patients with diabetic nephropathy. Dr Zeng Zi-Ling, President of BPM, expressed that the company is now collaborating with a German pharmaceutical company in the evaluation of new drug development projects.

The establishment of BPM showcases the research capacity of the biopharmaceutical industry in Taiwan. The TRPMA and the stakeholders all expect a brighter and prosperous future of the industry.
