In the absence of diplomatic ties, the agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed Tuesday by East Asian Relations Commission Chairman Lee Chia-chin and Mitsuo Ohashi, chairman of the Japan Interchange Association, at a hotel in downtown Taipei. The five agreements and memoranda of understanding signed Tuesday deal with electronic commerce, cooperation on pharmaceutical regulations, railway cooperation, mutual recognition of patent priority claims, and air and maritime search and rescue.

TRPMA was invited to attend this ceremony. The framework agreement on pharmaceutical regulation cooperation calls for the Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) under the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to enhance policy coordination and promote exchanges in medical devices, new medicine and skincare products.

Part of this effort involves both nations taking turns hosting a Taiwan-Japan medical exchange meeting. The inaugural event is set to take place Dec. 23-24 in Taipei, with officials and business leaders gathering to discuss cooperation.
