TRPMA organized a conference to create a platform for direct communication between the biopharmaceuitcal industry and the academia. The Conference, titled “Crossing the Chasm: From Bench to Business”, was chaired by Prof Huang Weng-Foung. Scholars from Yang Ming University, Chang Gung University and Taipei Medical University introduced their research capacities and achievements waiting to be transferred to the industry. The representatives of the industry talked about their experiences in selecting research topics for development and their decision-making models for international collaboration projects. The president of CID Group, Lee Shih-Jen, shared his experiences in evaluating investment in biopharmaceutical companies.

TRPMA also unveiled its “Taiwan Biotech Navigation Map for Industry-Academia Collaboration” (http://www.trpma.org.tw/ind-aca/), a one-stop website containing information of key players of the industry to help facilitate the search of collaboration projects.

The Conference was successful and well-received. Participants agreed that the collaboration relationship between the academia and the industry should start before patent plans are laid out so that both parties can jointly discuss the scope and strategies of patents. Prof Huang stressed that as biopharmaceutical R&D is a long process, academic research projects must be supported by the industry’s resources in order to secure a better chance to succeed.
